Paul opens Romans 4 by bringing Abraham into the center of the discussion because Abraham stands at the root of Israel's identity and therefore at the root of every argument about righteousness, covenant standing, and belonging to the people of God. After saying in the previous chapter that boasting is excluded and that a person is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law, Paul now asks what Abraham "found." The point is not to satisfy historical curiosity. He is pressing a theological question that cuts straight through spiritual pride: If Abraham himself did not obtain righteousness by human effort, heritage, or fleshly privilege, then nobody else can make that claim either.

The phrase "according to the flesh" keeps the question pointed toward whatever can be claimed on a merely human level - ancestry, outward distinction, human performance, religious identity, or natural strength. Abraham was indeed Israel's forefather in a natural sense, but Paul is asking whether that natural relationship explains Abraham's acceptance with God. It does not. Paul chooses Abraham precisely because no larger example could be found. If even he must stand before God by faith, then every lesser person must stand there the same way. This makes Romans 4 a continuation of Paul's wider argument, not a side discussion. The gospel does not create a new way for Gentiles while leaving Abraham to be explained by another system.

Rather, Abraham himself belongs inside the same saving story Paul has been preaching. That means righteousness by faith is not a late adjustment to God's plan. It reaches back to the great patriarch himself. The searching pressure remains. Religious people often appeal to family background, correct forms, spiritual heritage, or past experience as though such things could settle their standing before God. Paul begins here to take all of that out of human hands. He is not belittling Abraham. He is honoring him by showing what truly made his life great: not fleshly distinction, but humble reliance on God.
